Does your dog need a brush up on its obedience training? Do you need advice for correcting certain behaviors? Our trainer, Bobby, is now offering time on Saturdays to speak in an open forum format about any issues you may be having with your pet. Tutoring begins February 4, and runs from 3p-4p. If you are not a current client of Greymont, please give us a call to register, as all pets who attend must be up-to-date on their vaccines. You are not required to bring your pet, but they are always welcome! There is no cost to attend.

It's hard to believe stores are already playing Christmas music. It's only a matter of days before we start seeing the classic Christmas commercials on TV. With all the hustle and bustle surrounding the holidays, the last thing you want to worry about is your pet's care. Go ahead and make your reservations early so you can mark one more thing off your to-do list. Here is a list of important things to remember:

November 22 and 28: Our vans are booked

November 24: Our office is closed on this day. Eat lots of turkey!

Christmas Eve: Our office is open until 2 pm, so drop your pets off early! We will not have vans on this day because it is a Saturday.

Christmas Day: Our office is closed.

New Years Day: Our office is closed.

Even though you won't be able to pick up or drop off your pets on days our office is closed, please note we do have 24 hour supervision in the kennel.

We love Halloween here at Greymont. It marks the unofficial beginning of the holiday season, and really helps everyone get into the mindset of pumpkin spice, hot cider, hay rides and everything fall has to offer. However, there are some potential risks for your four-legged kids. September 17th was a busy day for Greymont. We took part in the annual Mutt Strutt and Dog Day at Centennial Park. This event benefits the Nashville Humane Association. We couldn't have asked for better weather or a better turn out! Greymont donated agility equipment for the day, and we were happy to see families utilize the equipment with their dogs. A big thanks to all the new and old friends who came to see us! We can't wait to go back next year!

Does Your Dog Get the 'Back-to-School Blues'?

Prepare your pet now for the slower fall season.

As summer winds down, it's time for two-legged and four-legged family members alike to prepare to go back to school. And the start of the school year can be just as hard on your dog as it is on your kids. After three months of having kids around the house, lots of activities, and plenty of outdoors time, dogs can struggle with readjusting to long stretches of being home alone.

"Dogs, like children, need structure and when that structure is disrupted, even in a positive way like having more family around more often, it is hard on the dog to adjust when the schedule changes again," said Angie Falcsik, owner of Pawsitive K-9 Obedience. "We tend to do the obvious and spend more time loving and playing with our dog during the summer months when family is home more and forget that we need to continue with the structure and routine as well." It takes a while for your dog to adjust to the big changes in routine -- and then school starts up again, and his routine changes again.
You can make the transition from summer to fall easier on your dog with a few simple strategies shared by Falcsik.

Do Your Homework
If possible, Falcisk recommends that families continue their day-to-day routine over the summer. Try to stick to walking and feeding schedules to provide your dog some structure. If you haven't held up the routine for the past couple months, don't worry! Start adhering to it now in the weeks leading up to school. "A few weeks before school starts, get back into the regular school-year schedule," she said. "Although the kids may be home, remind them that playing with Fido all day will make him miss them even more when they go back to school. Start to schedule the play times so that they are more in line with school hours."

Extra Credit
Prepare your pup for the coming mornings when the family dashes out the door. "Schedule short periods of times when the entire family is going to be gone to see how Fido handles things. Start with everyone going for a walk for 10 minutes and build up to everyone being gone for an hour," said Falcisk. If your dog struggles with separation anxiety -- or to prevent it from occurring -- keep arrivals and departures low-key.

Recess
Just before or right as school starts up, find a class for you, your kids, and your dog. Falcisk said that classes like agility and nosework will provide your dog with an outlet for his energy while continuing to build your bond.
According to Falcisk, you can make the difficult school-year transition easier on your pup. The bottom line? Start thinking about your dog's needs before school begins. Once the semester starts, your pup will be ready to ace his new schedule!

Dogwarts, Cicadas and Heat Waves...Oh, My!

Even with rain, our Dogwarts event was a success! We met new people and dogs, and were able to catch up with old friends. The dogs didn't seem to mind the rain, though! Check out pictures HERE! Many thanks to Nashville Humane Association, Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue, Last Chance Pet Rescue from Dickson, TN, White Oak Animal Hospital and to Jeff with Nature's Select for coming out.

Luckily, we don't have the cicada "epidemic" in Fairview. But we have heard some interesting stories about dogs eating lots of them! Here's an article with facts about cicadas and the effect they can have on your pet.

Please keep your pets indoors or in a cool environment as much as possible! These temperatures are just going to get higher as we move through the summer. Read this article for signs of heat exhaustion in dogs.

Greymont will begin Play and Learn Monday, May 2. Think of this daily program as day school for your dog. The program will teach dogs how to communicate and play with other dogs, and will help them develop dog language and problem solving skills. If you are interested in enrolling your dog in Play and Learn, give us a call to set up your initial interview! This program is available Monday through Friday only.

Greymont Kennel will host a Harry Potter inspired event for families and their dogs Sunday, May 22 from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Throughout the day, guests can participate in many activities, including a dog walk through the “Forbidden Forest,” and a costume contest featuring dogs dressed as Harry Potter characters. Professor Bobby Harber will offer “charm classes” which will answer questions and offer advice about dog training and behavior.

Because no Harry Potter event would be complete without Harry’s favorite sport, Greymont’s outdoor training ring will become a Quidditch field for muggles and their dogs to enjoy. Dogs can also practice for the Triwizard Dog Tournament.

The Nashville Humane Association and the Middle Tennessee Golden Retriever Rescue will join the event to raise awareness about their rescues, and to show off adoptable dogs. Though the event is free, Greymont encourages guests to donate to these rescues. Nature’s Select Pet Foods will also be on hand to talk about their holistic pet food line.

If you would like for your dog to participate in the costume contest, please arrive at Greymont at 12 p.m.

Just a reminder: Our office will be closed on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30). We will also have no van service on that day.

Fosters Need Homes!

Occasionally, we catch word of some great dogs who need forever homes.

The first is a sweet girl who was recently rescued from a puppy mill in McMinnville. Greymont's own Kayla is currently fostering and working with Gail (everyone here calls her Honey). She's doing great with her housebreaking and socialization. If you are interested in meeting her, please contact Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue.

We also know of a sweet dalmatian mix named Sam. His marking make him look like he's always smiling! 6-month-old Sam is in good health, but is missing some toes (his current foster mom doesn't know his story, as she found him on the side of the interstate). Even with him deformed feet, he still loves to play, and is a happy little guy. We'll have a picture of him soon! If you are interested, give us a call!

We still have vacancy at the kennel for spring break, however, our vans are booked for the following dates: Friday, March 11; Friday, March 18; Sunday, March 20; and Sunday, March 27. Note: We don't run vans on Saturdays.

Greymont's staff is currently enjoying classes from Nikki Ivey, of Dog Speak, so we can begin a new daycare program. Our "play and learn" curriculum will teach dogs to communicate with dogs and humans. We will continue to update you on the status of this new curriculum over the next couple of months.

On Saturday, March 12, we will begin two new series of group classes. Our "Basic Obedience" class will start at 9 am, and our "Puppy Kindergarten" will begin at 11 am. Both classes will meet once a week for 4 weeks. See our Academy website or give us a call for more details.

We hope you will join us Saturday, April 16th for "Barks for Parks" at Bowie Park and Nature Center. Come meet new friends, spend time with your favorite pup and sign-up to win prizes for lots of venders!

When Autumn came to Greymont for the first time, her owner was worried about her because she was a rescue and was not used to a kennel environment. Seeing that she was shy and nervous, the staff immediately began trying to comfort her, as they do with all dogs under a lot of stress. By the time she left, Autumn was a completely different dog! She has since boarded with us again, and loves it! Here are some pictures after she had been with us a few days. We think she's made some friends! ;-)

Even the cold weather can't keep us from having fun! We were fortunate to get to participate in the Nashville Humane Association's Unleashed dinner on January 22nd. There is nothing more exciting than raising money for pets with fellow pet lovers. Check out the Tennessean's article on the event here. We have had a lot of activity here at the kennel as well. Though the snow has kept us indoors, we are still having a blast! The training room, kennel halls and even the front office have become play areas for our guests.

Keep Your Pet Safe This Christmas

It's hard to believe it is almost Christmastime again!

Now is a great time to book your Christmas reservation too! Our office is open on Christmas Eve from 8 am until 2 pm. Our vans are already booked for Christmas Eve. Our office is closed on Christmas.

The holidays are a special time for family and friends, but don't forget about your pets. If you are going to include them in the festivities, be sure to keep them safe.

Kitchen Safety

Tin foil, meat strings, and toothpicks, can cause serious digestive problems if swallowed.
Dough can expand in the stomach and cause severe problems if swallowed.
Chocolate, coffee, and tea are very toxic for dogs. Even small amounts can cause diarrhea, seizures or death. Unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate are most dangerous.
Bones, cooked or uncooked, can tear or obstruct the digestive system.
Sweets, greasy, or spicy foods can cause pancreatitis which is a serious inflammation of the pancreas and can be fatal.
Alcoholic beverages are attractive to some dogs, especially sweet alcoholic beverages such as eggnog. Remind guests to keep glasses out of reach of the dog and put away glasses after parties. A small amount of alcohol can be fatal.
Keep garbage covered and out of reach.

Christmas Tree and Decoration Safety

Christmas trees should be secured to prevent toppling. Do not allow your dog to eat fallen pine needles or even artificial tree needles as they can be toxic or cause stomach irritation.
Christmas tree water can contain poisonous pine tar or tree preservatives.
Many dogs think ornaments are toys and want to play with them. These can cause digestive problems/obstructions.
Christmas lights can cause digestive upsets or electrocution if chewed.
Electrical cords can cause electrocution or a fire hazard if chewed.
Costumes and Christmas outfits are adorable on Scruffy but they should not bind or constrict, block the dog’s vision, or have pieces that can cause choking if swallowed.
Almost all Christmas plants, including holly leaves and berries, poinsettias, and mistletoe are poisonous or irritating to dogs if swallowed.

Outdoor Safety

Antifreeze tastes sweet and many dogs are attracted to it. Just a few drops can be fatal.
Hypothermia can pose a danger during severe cold. Puppies, old dogs, and sick dogs are most vulnerable. Dress your dog in winter clothing or restrict outdoor time. Provide snug shelter. Warm your dog quickly if he starts to shiver.
Ice-melting chemicals and salt can irritate paws or cause digestive upsets if swallowed.

Tips for Avoiding Trouble

Provide your dog with a safe and comfortable place, such as a crate or a baby gated room, away from holiday dangers and the stress of unfamiliar guests and disrupted schedules.

We sometimes take for granted the special little stories that happen at Greymont, because they happen so frequently!

Goofy, a large black and white pointer, first came to Greymont a little over a year ago because of some fairly severe aggressive habits. We determined his aggression was mostly caused by fear. Through patience, compassion and a lot of treats, we began to reverse the way he looked at people. Initially while boarding with us, he would only allow a couple of people to handle him for walks. Now, he is comfortable with most of our employees. Though Goofy still has his favorite people here at the kennel, he has become very familiar with the Greymont family, and walks with his head up and tail wagging.

Keep Your Pets Safe Tonight!

Dogs certainly have a sweet tooth! However, chocolate is the wrong treat for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, also known as xantheose, is a bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant, found in chocolate, as well as in a number of other foods, including the leaves of the tea plant. In high enough quantities it can stop your pet’s heart. Even in small amounts, it can be irritating to the gut lining and cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If you suspect your pet has ingested Halloween candy, call your vet or the Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.

Other tips:

Popular Halloween decorations such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively non-toxic; however, they can produce upset stomachs in pets.

Carved pumpkins are festive this time of year! If a candle is used to light your Jack-o-lantern, place them in an area where pets will be unlikely to knock them over to avoid a fire.

Electric lights and other decorations should be out of the reach of pets. If the cords are chewed, your pet may suffer from burns or possibly a life threatening shock.

If you dress up your pet, make certain that the costume does not constrict the pet's natural movements or impede their ability to see, hear, and breathe or to bark or meow.

Closely inspect your pet's costume to ensure that there are no dangling pieces that can be easily chewed that they could choke on.

Even some of the most social pets should be kept in a separate room during trick-or -treat hours. Too many human ghouls can be scary and stressful for even the most social pet.

When opening the door for our trick-or-treaters, make certain that your pet does not dart out the door.

Make certain that your pet(s) has proper identification. If your pet should escape and become lost, a collar with license or other ID can be a lifesaver.

Greymont was excited to get to participate in the annual Nashville Dog Day Festival and Mutt Strutt at Centennial Park this past weekend.

Many pet related organizations and vendors came together at the Pedigree ® sponsored event to benefit the Nashville Humane Association.

Greymont’s demonstration, “Preschool through Ph.D.,” showed onlookers the importance of lifelong training and education for your pet. Trainers Tami, Bobby and Octavio showed off the skills of dogs in varying levels of training, and were also on hand to discuss the different programs the new Greymont Academy offers.

Hello, Daisy

At Greymont, magic seems to happen almost every day. Often it happens in the training room or on the agility course – and sometimes it happens off campus, in homes and neighborhoods in and around Nashville.

Daisy is one of our magical tales:

One recent afternoon, the Greymont pick-up/drop-off van was driving through one of our usual neighborhoods in the Belle Meade area. The driver, Ben, and Greymont employee, Tiffany, noticed some joggers huddled around a dog lying in the grass, apparently in distress.

The Greymont team immediately pulled over to see how they could be of assistance. They offered the panting beagle mix some water and noted her collar and tags: Her name was Daisy.

Ben wondered if Daisy was a friend of Greymont. Tiffany quickly called the kennel and asked the staff there to search the database for dogs named Daisy in the 37205 zip code. Alas, among the many Daisys in the database, they identified one from a street just a few blocks from where the dog was found.

They transported Daisy, who was fortunately just a bit overheated and tired from her journey away from home, back to her distraught but extremely grateful owner.

Daisy had actually not yet been to the kennel, but had once registered and canceled an overnight stay. Thankfully, Greymont never loses track of its friends and guests – and our caring staff and trusty database were able to make a little magic happen for Daisy and her family.
